After scoring his first professional goal and notching an assist this past weekend, midfielder Adam Najem was voted to the USL Team of the Week after his standout performance against New York Red Bulls II.
Najem, a member of the Philadelphia Union who has been loaned to Steel FC for nine matches this season, had a breakout performance against his former organization. The 22-year-old helped push the club’s winning streak to four and continue the team’s push up the USL Eastern Conference standings where they sit in fifth place.
Playing just miles from his hometown of Clifton, NJ, Najem notched the opening goal on a curling strike from just inside the 18-yard box. While fans funneled into the stands, Steel FC struck for the opening goal in the fifth minute. Playing against his brother David, Najem converted on the club’s patience in the final third. Chris Nanco notched his first professional assist on the goal, finding the 22-year-old at the end of the Red Bulls box. After a quick touch, Najem delivered with a left-footed strike past the diving Rafael Diaz.
Najem rounded out his night with his second assist of the season on Santi Moar’s second-half goal in the 57th minute. Collecting a pass from team captain James Chambers, the midfielder chipped the Red Bull II defense. Moar rant onto the volley, chipping it over the on-coming goalkeeper for his second goal of the season.
Najem is the fourth member of Bethlehem Steel FC to be named to the USL Team of the week. He joins forward Seku Conneh, USL Player of the Week in Week 3, defender Hugh Roberts in Week 6 and goalkeeper Jake McGuire who was named in Week 8 after a seven-save shutout performance on the road at Toronto FC II.
Najem and Steel FC conclude the month of June tonight against in-state rival Harrisburg City Islanders. Kickoff in the series finale is set for 7 p.m. at FNB Field and will be broadcast locally on Service Electric and online on YouTube.
