As part of the Union’s Pride Night on July 26, the team will be raising awareness for Valley Youth House’s #CouchesDontCount campaign with a couch on the plaza before the match.
#CouchesDontCount launched in 2015 to bring awareness to the 40 percent of youth experiencing homelessness who identify as LGBTQ.
The most recent Youth Count suggested 64 percent of youth experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia, including those that identify as LGBTQ, are couch surfing and staying with friends rather than sleeping unsheltered. For comparison, the general population only has five to seven percent experience homelessness.
The couch on the plaza will showcase that #CouchesDontCount as stable housing for homeless youth and the LGBTQ community.
The goal is to help youth find resources, shelter and eventually achieve independence and stability. To learn more about the #CouchesDontCount campaign and where to donate, please click here.
