The vision for Philadelphia Union has been to develop young American players. The philosophy blossomed with the development of Homegrown products Auston Trusty and Derrick Jones, as the two went on to play in the U-20 World Cup in South Korea last summer.
Head Coach Jim Curtin has said multiple times that he wants the club to a destination spot for young American players and as the youth movement continues with Anthony Fontana and Mark McKenzie we check in on the fifth Homegrown, Matt Real.
Real has been away from the club for the past week due to international team obligations. On May 9, Real was summoned by U.S. Soccer to join the U-20 squad in South Florida for domestic camp as they prepared for international friendlies in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
For Real, being called in by the National Team is always humbling.
“It’s always an honor to be called in by the National Team. For me to continue to represent my country is something I never take for granted,” Real said. “This is a great opportunity for me to continue to work on my game and continue to show what I can do at the international level.”
Before the USYNT traveled to Honduras, they participated in a domestic camp and competed in a friendly against FC Miami City. Real started in the friendly as the U-20 Youth National Team cruised to a 5-0 win.
There was a notable moment in the contest, as Real served as the Captain for the United States Youth National Team in their friendly against FC Miami City. This is a role that Real cherishes and wants to continue to build on as camp continues.
“Being the Captain for the National Squad is something that means everything to me,” Real said. “This is a role I feel very comfortable in and I hope I can continue to build off of that. Being with the National Team is always a great experience and I just want to keep that going.”
Real and the Youth National Team will take on Honduras twice in a span of three days. The first match will take place tomorrow and then camp will wrap up with a friendly finale on Saturday against Honduras.
On May 28, the United States Men's National Team will come to Talen Energy Stadium when they host Bolivia in a friendly. Fans looking to attend the match can purchase tickets below with the special promo code EPYSMAY28.
