Derrick Jones Earns USL Team of the Week Honors
Philadelphia Union midfielder scored opening goal at Cincinnati and aided defense in draw at Eastern Conference leaders
The opening goal on the road combined with a strong defensive effort at Cincinnati while with Bethlehem Steel FC has earned midfielder Derrick Jones USL Team of the Week honors for Week 14.
The Philadelphia Union midfielder struck for his team-leading third goal of the season in the 29th minute, collecting his own blocked shot at the edge of the box and firing a second attempt inside the post.
Scoring wasn’t the only contribution Jones, Steel FC’s first signing of its modern existence, made as he recorded three tackles, three interceptions and won 11 of 15 duels over the contest. Jones’ contribution helped lead Steel FC to its fifth result in its last six matches with a 2-2 draw at the Eastern Conference leaders.
Jones’ accolades are the fifth occasion a member of Bethlehem Steel FC has earned Team of the Week honors. Santi Moar has appeared twice while Brandon Allen and Fabian Herbers collected the league’s weekly accolades in 2018.
Bethlehem Steel FC returns to action tomorrow, June 20, as the club plays host to rival New York Red Bulls II. Kick off from Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast locally on Service Electric and streamed online on ESPN+.
